Asbestos
comes naturally from the earth, but products made by man for
durability and heat resistance usually contain much more
asbestos that what nature makes.
Asbestos fibers are used for
building materials including insulation, cement and tiles.
It is also used for car parts including brakes and clutches.
What makes it very dangerous is
that it is invisible, odorless and can easily be airborne.
Exposure
to asbestos continues because it was used extensively in many
buildings, from industrial sites to homes and schools. As
a result, a cancerous disease, mesothelioma, has been diagnosed
in many victims, usually men who are over forty years old.
Because
mesothelioma does not appear until as long as 50 years later,
those exposed years ago may be developing this cancer today.
In
addition to mesothelioma, you may have asbestosis, a lung
ailment. This
disease is not malignant and is not cancerous, but the fact it
exists even if benign shows that you have been exposed to
asbestos and thus, you may be developing the malignant and fatal
cancer, mesothelioma.
