farm insurance was the idea of George J. Mecherle when he was in
his 40s. After he and his wife, Edith Mae Perry, had
farmed for 20 years near Bloomington, Illinois, they decided to
move to the city of Bloomington because her health needed closer
medical attention.
After
Mecherle became a successful salesman for an insurance company,
he believed that farmers should get a break in their rates
because they had fewer car accidents as those living in the
city. With this belief, state farm was formed and has
grown into one of today's leading insurance companies.
